Caregiver Tip of the Month: Stay True to the Routine During the Holidays

Holiday disruptions can overwhelm seniors—keeping routines steady supports safety, comfort, and confidence throughout the season.
Holiday caregiver tip: Protect routines to keep seniors steady.

The holidays can be wonderful, but they can also shake up a senior’s world with schedule changes, extra visitors, noisy gatherings, and more outings than usual. That “busy buzz” can feel overwhelming and may increase confusion, anxiety, and fall risk. Whenever possible, aim to keep the basics of the day steady, even if everything else is a little more festive.

Meals: Try to keep meal times close to the normal schedule, even if portions or menu items change. If holiday meals run late, offer a light snack at the usual time to prevent dips in blood sugar, fatigue, and irritability.

Medications: Stick to the regular medication schedule and use reminders (pill organizer, alarms, written checklist). If you’ll be away from home, pack meds ahead of time so doses don’t get skipped in the shuffle.

Rest and sleep: Protect rest times like they’re appointments. Encourage a quiet break before or after gatherings, and keep bedtime routines consistent (same wind-down steps, dim lights, familiar music/TV). Too much stimulation can lead to sundowning, agitation, or poor sleep.

Outings and visitors: Space activities out when you can. One event a day may be plenty. Shorter visits often go better than long ones, especially when dealing with dementia. If there’s a crowd, choose a calmer room or plan an “exit option” to not feel overwhelmed or overstimulated.

Safety check: With more movement and distractions, do a quick scan for trip hazards (coats and bags on the floor, extra cords, clutter near walkways). Make sure lighting is good, shoes are supportive, and mobility aids are within reach.

A calm, predictable day is like a handrail for the brain and body. Even small efforts to protect routine can make a big difference in comfort, confidence, and safety during the holiday season.
